He is the father of another Milan and Italy legend, Paolo Maldini, and he also managed both sides, AC Milan between 1972 and 1974 and Italy between 1996 and 1998.
In honor of Maldini, AC Milan will be wearing a black armband when they take on Atalanta today. “The passing of Cesare Maldini means the passing of a fundamental part of the Rossonero history,” the club said in a statement.
“The captain of the first European Milan in 1963 at Wembley, the father of Paolo, the anagram of ‘Milan’ in the letters of his surname.
“All of Milan – all of the people and the representatives of Milan – are touched and express their deeply felt condolences to Mrs Maldini, to his sons and nephews.”

Italian Football Federation president Carlo Tavecchio said in a statement: “He left us — a great man and an absolute hero of football. As a player and as a coach he tied his name to the history of Italian football.
“After becoming the first Italian to lift the European Cup he helped many Azzurri players to grow, embodying perfectly the spirit and the role of federation coach.” Tavecchio added that there would be a minute’s silence before all games in the country today and tomorrow.
