Akpeyi replaces Ikeme in Super Eagles squad for Algeria game

The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), has announced that Technical Adviser of the Super Eagles, Gernot Rohr, has invited goalkeeper Daniel Akpeyi to camp, ahead of next week’s 2018 World Cup qualifier against Algeria in Uyo.

Akpeyi, who plays his football for Chippa United in the Absa Premiership, will be a direct replacement for the injured Carl Ikeme.

Ikeme’s English club, Wolverhampton Wanderers, wrote to the NFF to say that the goalkeeper will not be available for the match, as a result of injury he picked up against Blackburn Rovers.

Akpeyi was in the Nigeria U-20 team, that finished as runners-up at the 2005 FIFA U-20 World Cup in Holland and was part of the Dream Team VI, that won bronze at this year’s Olympics in Rio, Brazil.

Nigeria will take on Algeria on November 12 at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium.
