MTN’s Investments In Nigeria Hit $15bn

The Corporate Services executive of MTN Nigeria, Mr Wale Goodluck, said the company’s investments in Nigeria has topped $15 billion, making it the leading information and communications technology provider in West Africa.

He disclosed this while announcing that the telecom operator has been awarded the Tier III certification for the design of its data centre from the Uptime Institute.

The MTN data centre, which is located in Ojota, was assessed on various criteria, all of which were passed successfully.

The Uptime Institute is an internationally recognised evaluator of data centres and has awarded 490 certifications in 66 countries across the globe. Established in 1993, its Tier classification system is widely accepted as the standardised methodology used in determining the functionality, capacity, availability and performance of data centres.

“The Tier III certification award mirrors the depth of investment in our network infrastructure. With this, our enterprise customers can be assured that all elements of the infrastructure in our data centre are capable of enterprise-grade performance in terms of power, security, cooling and disaster mitigation in the event of a fire outbreak,” the chief executive officer, MTN Nigeria, Michael Ikpoki, said.

MTN’s Data Centre can achieve 99.98 per cent availability and can operate uninterrupted during routine maintenance or equipment change with only 1.6 hours interruption per year.

“This award is yet another testament to our commitment to fulfilling our value proposition to our customers through collocation, managed hosting and cloud solutions.

We will continue to invest in modern infrastructure and deliver world-class services to our customers as we strive to lead the delivery of a bold new digital world,” Ikpoki said.

The Data Centre accreditation is defined by four tiers. The tiers start at a simple Tier 1 level, which is equivalent to a server room and goes up to the most robust levels of Tier 3 and 4, which offer guaranteed availability and are designed to host mission critical computer systems with fully redundant sub-systems, power, security and access control. Full Tier III Certification involves rigorous testing of all systems to demonstrate concurrent maintainability under full load while disconnected from the main power supply.

The MTN Data Center, Lagos, is the largest switch in West Africa, comprising of the National Management Centre, NMC, training facility office and a fully integrated power facility.
