Collapsed building: FCT Minister orders probe of workers’ as Police arrests site engineer

FCT Minister, Malam Muhammad Musa Bello has described as unfortunate the mudslide that occurred Tuesday evening trapping and killing two labourers at a private construction site, Plot 3333, Mississippi Street, Maitama District, Abuja.
The Minister, accompanied by the FCT Permanent Secretary, Dr. Babatope Ajakaiye visited the site on Tuesday night to assess the situation.

Bello directed the FCT Development Control to thoroughly investigate what really went wrong that led to the death of the two men and report back within days.

His words: “The FCT Administration is going to investigate thoroughly the unfortunate incident and ensure that this kind of ugly situation does not happen again in the FCT.”

The Minister commiserated with the families of the deceased labourers and prayed to God for the repose of their souls.

Malam Bello has also directed the Executive Secretary of the Federal Capital Development Authority (FCDA), Engr. Adamu Ismaila to immediately move into the area to provide remedial action to protect the infrastructure there.

On Wednesday, Adamu Ismaila, who visited on behalf of the Minister confirmed that FCTA has commenced the remedial action as ordered by his boss, adding that measures have been put in place to avoid the repeat of such ugly incident.

Part of the measures, he stated, is for all the contractors working at the site to temporarily stop work and immediately provide retaining wall.

Other measures include the engagement of Habib Engineering Company Limited to immediately take over the collapsed site (Plot 3333) and restore the embankment to prevent further erosion and possible collapse of the Mississippi Road.

Also, other developers working at the site are to resume robust protection of the embankments for all the plots to prevent further collapse as well as ensuring that the staff of both Departments of Development Control and Engineering Services are permanently on site for inspection as work progresses.

Meanwhile, the site engineer has been arrested by the Police following the collapse.
