Does Being Young Play An Important Role In Succeeding In Nigerian Music Industry?

The music industry is getting bigger and better by the day with younger artistes springing up and changing the course of the entire industry.

Older Artistes who have already made a name for themselves are the very few lucky ones who can compete with the younger artistes.

But does your age really matters when it comes to doing music in Nigeria? This has become a bone of contention for many who have refused to believe the idealogy that to be successful now in the music industry you need to be young and basking with energy.

Gone are the days when music was for the matured ones when our parents did not approve of their children going into music as a career, so to be in music you need to have graduated from school and a bit indepedent from your parent before you would have the freedom to pursue your dreams. But things have changed.

Parents now support and encourage their children that want to venture into music or any sector of the entertainment industry. This new improvement has increased the influx of younger artistes venturing into music as a profession.

I cannot overemphasize the rate at which younger artistes are running the industry at the moment. Every record label now wants to sign only young talented artistes. No one is even giving attention to the more experience ones anymore.

If you are not young then you are not seen as relevant by the younger generation who wants artistes that they can relate with. Knowing that 70% of their fans are youths.

Lets take a look at the career of three senior and experienced influencial artistes, M.I Abaga, D’banj and Wande Coal.

During their A-days when they just started, these three talented musicians started at a very young age in their 20s and they had it all from headlining the biggest shows to getting all the female fans dying to meet them and releasing hit songs back to back.

But all of a sudden it all came to an abrupt end when their fans grew up and the younger generation wanted younger artistes that they can relate with, which led to the stagnant career of these older artistes.

But it’s not as if these artistes are not putting in their best like they used to, it’s just that things has changed, time has evolved, people have aged and so has people’s perception of music also changed.

Artistes like Davido, Wizkid, Olamide, Lil Kesh, Kiss Daniel, Reekado Banks, Korede Bello and many others have redefined the industry and taken it to the next level making it look difficult for the older ones to break-in. It now looks like if you are not young you wont be heard.

This is to show that your age can influence your chances of ever making it big in your music career in Nigeria.

What people want to listen to now are songs that appeal to their wellbeing, their social lifestyle and belief with 70 percent of the people who listen to your music are youths from the age of 10 to 35.

So if you put this people in mind when making music you can be well assured that you would remain a bit relevant and still be able to compete with the younger artistes.

Take a look at 2Face Idibia, Timaya and P-Square who started very young and are still relevant today can only be attributed to the fact that the evolved with time and kept in touch with the younger generation by writing and singing about songs that appeals to them.

So whenever you think of your chances of making it big in the music industry always remember that age is not a main criteria but it’s also very vital.

You can be what you want to become when you believe and work towards it. First of all do your research before you decide to spend a dime on your music career.

Take into consideration the age group you want to reachout to, the style of music you want to do and lastly the brand you want to portray which has to inline with the youth or younger generation.
