Fight To Finish For APC Presidential Ticket As KwanKwaso Declares Bid Oct 23

Barring any last minute changes, Governor Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso will on October 23 in Abuja, publicly declare his presidential ambition, an indication that attempts to make him withdraw from the race for another leading aspirant, General Muhammadu Buhari (retd), were unsuccessful.

The governor, according to party sources, wants the former head of state to endorse him because he has age on his side and due to their perceived closeness but those who are loyal to Buhari are asking Kwankwaso to respect the age and the experience of the three-time presidential candidate and withdraw from the race.

Speaking to some journalists in Abuja yesterday, a chieftain of APC and staunch supporter of Kwankwaso, Chief Olisaemeka Akamukali, said the governor will be unveiling his presidential campaign by next week Thursday based on the plans drawn up by his campaign co-ordinators nationwide.

According to the APC chieftain, Kwankwaso has been engaging in nationwide consultations with party leaders and political stakeholders regarding his presidential ambition and the responses so far have been favourable.

Akamukali faulted claims that the governor may have slowed down his campaign due to pressures to step down for Buhari, saying rather, it is the former head of state that should give way for a younger and more vibrant candidate in line with the need for generational shift.

“In as much as we agree that Buhari is a man of integrity, you will also agree with me that age is not on his side. He is 73 going to 74 years and ex-vice president Atiku Abubakar is about 70 years old. But Kwankwaso will be 58 by October 21”, he noted.

Speaking on the chances of Kwankwaso against the much more established older politicians in the race, Akamukali debunked speculations that the Kano governor is a green horn in the race.

According to him, Governor Kwankwaso has long years of experience under his belt which began in 1991, when he emerged the deputy speaker of the House of Representatives on the platform of the Social Democratic Party (SDP).
