Former England football star Alan Shearer teamed up with Newcastle School for Boys earlier this week to attempt the record for the Most self-portrait photographs (selfies) taken in three minutes

In a bid to celebrate the students’ achievements and raise money for The Alan Shearer Foundation, they took on what has become one of the most hotly contested Guinness World Records titles in recent times.

A mass of school kids aged 3-18 years old lined up at the nearby South North Cricket Club in Gosforth while the Newcastle striker prepared to take the selfies on his iPhone.

The rules for this title state that the photographer’s face must be fully visible in all snaps and have a different additional person in each one.

Official Guinness World Records adjudicator Pravin Patel was on hand to officiate the attempt.


After a few near misses, the boys eventually managed to break the record by a nail-biting single selfie to set a new record of 134.

Speaking after the record was announced, Shearer said: “It was very tense but a lot fun and it also benefits the foundation which is great. It’s definitely the most selfies I’ve ever taken in one day.”

Head teacher David Tickner added: “I was so nervous I couldn’t really watch, but I’m delighted that we got there. It was really important to get the whole age range of boys involved, as a way of showing their development. We were looking for a fun and engaging way of getting everyone involved and selfies seemed like a great way to do it.”

The previous record was set by Sukhpreet Singh (India) during an event organised by Huawei in Dubai in January this year.

This title has proved popular with celebrities all over the world, as we have previously seen attempts from the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo, Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson, Taylor Lautner and Donnie Wahlberg.
