Kogi CJ Releases 3 Inmates In Ankpa Prisons

Chief Judge of Kogi Nasir Ajanah on Friday unconditionally released three Awaiting Trial inmates from Federal Prisons, Ankpa in Kogi.


Ajanah also granted bail to one other inmate when he reviewed cases of 33 inmates on remand during his ongoing decongestion visits to prison formations in the state.


He said the unconditional and immediate release of the inmates was in view of the fact that they were detained unjustly.


Among those pardoned were Hassan Ameh and Abdul Yunusa charged with conspiracy and culpable homicide over the killing of one ”Aro” son of their village chief, stabbed to death and left in the bush.


The chief judge said he released them following a legal advice from the state Justice Ministry as they only rendered assistance in finding the deceased who was missing after Fulani herdsmen attack.


Joseph Moses, an awaiting trial inmate charged with criminal force, criminal intimidation, rape and armed robbery also breathed the air of freedom after seven months in detention.



He was discovered to have been ”framed” by the father of his girlfriend after an disagreement with the girl.



Ajanah, however, held that the period he had spent in custody was more than the sentence he would have served upon conviction.



Abdul Halilu, who denied the allegations of criminal force, assault and attempt to commit rape, was granted bail by the chief judge.



Ajanah assured the remaining inmates whose cases were at various stages of trial that before June 5, their cases would be reviewed and “those who should not be here would have been released’’.

The chief judge also directed all magistrates that henceforth no case should be adjourned beyond two weeks, especially cases of those in detention.
The Officer-in-Charge of the prison, Mr Monday Tibu, an Assistant Comptroller of Prisons, commended the chief judge and judicial officers in the Ankpa for their efforts at decongesting the prisons.



The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Ankpa Prisons with 29 inmate capacity had 51 inmates including 18 convicts and 33 Awaiting Trial inmates at the time of the visit. (NAN)
