Nigeria needs more political parties – Group

A political group, All Grassroots Alliance, has called for the registration of more credible political parties before 2019 elections to enhance the countries democracy.

The National Publicity Secretary of the group, Prof. Salimanu Yekini, told newsmen on Friday that Nigeria needed more genuine political parties to deepen its democracy.

He said, “Nigeria needs people who are genuinely concerned about the interest of the masses and are truly upright to salvage the nation.

“There is, therefore, the urgent need to have a core progressive, non-tribal, non-religious and non-sectional political party quite distinct from the present registered parties.”

He observed that the All Grassroots Alliance, if registered as a political party, would focus on integrity, hard work, truth, self-discipline, prudence and patriotism, among others.

He said the Independent National Electoral Commission had recognised the group for registration, noting that it had satisfied INEC requirements for party registration.

He said, “The group has representations in 30 states at ward and local government levels. So, we have an impressive spread across the country.

“If it is registered, it will ensure that efforts are geared towards poverty reduction, alleviation and eradication in our immediate and larger society.

“It will create an egalitarian society that is free from wants, corruption and nepotism by introducing positive innovation into the country’s body politics.

“It will also explore and exploit all avenues and opportunities to put Nigeria on fast track of growth by creating an optimally variable socioeconomic environment.”

Yekini, nonetheless, lauded the efforts of the present administration at fixing the country’s challenges, calling on Nigerians to support the government programmes.

“The challenges facing this nation are enormous and there is no doubt that these would have to be fixed by Nigerians,’’ he said.

Notable officials present during its meeting include the National Vice-Chairman, South West, Mr. Bisi Agboola; the Facilitator, Abia, Mr. Igbokore Ucheachukwu; the Deputy National Chairman, North, and Mr Belmont Dogo.
