Nigeria’s Population Will Out Grow USA In 2050 – United Nations

Nigeria’s population will substantially move from the present estimated figure of 182 million to about 399 million in the next 35 years according to a new United Nations (UN) survey.

The report of the UN survey indicates that Nigeria’s population by 2050 will surpass that of the United States of America and will be just behind India and China, making Nigeria the third most populated country in the world.

The report, which was released on Thursday, also says Nigeria, which is presently the seventh most populous country in the world, will have about 752 million inhabitants by 2100.

Presently, China with 1.37bn people is the most populous nation, followed by India with 1.31bn residents, and then the United States with 322m people. Indonesia is currently in fourth place with 258m, while population figures for Brazil stands at 208m. Pakistan is sixth with 189m people and Nigeria is seventh with 182m people.

The study also revealed that the world’s population has increased with about one billion people in the last 12 years to make it 7.3 billion people by mid-2015.

The Director of the United Nations Population Division, John Wilmoth, while highlighting the challenges developing nations will face due to rapid population growth, noted that the concentration of population growth in the poorest countries has made it more difficult to eradicate poverty and inequality.

Other challenges listed included combating hunger and malnutrition and expanding educational enrollment and health systems, all of which he described as crucial to the success of the new sustainable development agenda.

A part of the report read, “The population is forecast to increase by another billion over the next 15 years, exceeding 9.7 billion by 2050 and 11.2 billion by 2100. The projected increase can be attributed to high-fertility countries, mostly in Africa, or countries with already existing large populations.

“During the next 35 years, Africa is expected to account for more than half of the world’s population growth, with 28 African nations forecast to more than double their population.”
