Women's World Cup: Nigeria And Ghana Lose Opening Games

Who Can Win it Big This Time?

French player Emelyne Laurent opened the account for her team when she scored a goal only five minutes after Helene Fercocq hit the first goal. Laurent scored third goal for France and second for her record in the game’s 31st minute. Sandra Owusu-Ansah hit Ghana’s first goal in the second half of the game but her goal almost went unnoticed after French substitute Sandy Baltimore hit the fourth goal for France when only 30 minutes of the game to over were left. Ghana will play the Netherlands in another Group A stage match on August 8, 2018 in the evening at 4.30 pm.

New Zealand lost against the Netherlands in a fierce match by 1 - 2. The team’s coach, Gareth Turnbull, is uncertain about his team winning the international tournament but is hopeful after the show New Zealand under 20 put up. New Zealand will be playing against Ghana and the host, France in the next group stage matches. It doesn’t look like the Netherlands’ first ever U20 Women’s World Cup match because their performance has been exceptional.

In 2016’s edition, North Korea won the title after beating current hosts, France, in a nerve wrecking match. North Korea defeated France by 3 - 1. Japan had taken the third place, while the United States of America settled for the fourth. This is North Korea’s second win, the first one coming in 2006 against People's Republic of China. The win also made North Korea the second Asian team after Saudi Arabia to win the U20 Women’s World Cup. Saudi Arabia didn’t qualify for this year’s world cup.
