Judiciary’ll clear me, says woman accused of stealing

A 34-year old woman, Omolola Shittu, of Eric Emmanuel Crescent off Bode-Thomas in the Surulere area of Lagos State, has said that only the judiciary can help her overcome the tortuous phase she is currently passing through, which she claims was caused by her former lover.

It had been reported that the lover, Prince Hilary Unachukwu, who lives on Ojora Road, off Alexander Ikoyi in the state, had accused her of stealing his Honda Accord Saloon car and some household items following a break in their two-year-old relationship.

The allegation led to her arrest by men from the Zone 2 Police Command who later arraigned her before an Igbosere Magistrate’s Court.

Shittu, a decorator, had lamented her experience while she was in detention where she claimed to have spent three days, adding that her stay in Kirikiri before the perfection of her bail condition was more hellish as some prison officials harassed her.

Recounting her past with Unachukwu, she said she had tried to please him by quitting her work while the relationship lasted.

She said, “He complained I was not giving him enough time and told me to quit my work which I did to please him.”

The mother of one said that the controversial car was a valentine gift that Unachukwu gave her in 2013. She stated further that she was surprised when Unachukwu brought policemen to her house and packed the gadgets which he bought for her.

“Truly, he was the one that bought the car and the household items for me and my name is on the receipts. It was when we broke up that he came up with the allegation of stealing. In March this year, he came to drop my luggage and told me he was no longer interested in the relationship. I was happy because it was like a dream come true.

“After a month he came back to me and I said no. One day he came to my house and b@nged the gate but I didn’t answer. Two months later, policemen came to arrest me for stealing a car, refrigerator, freezer, generator, washing machine and so on.

“While I was waiting in prison for my bail to be perfected, I was treated as a convict, wearing a uniform and parking dirt. I am tired; only the judiciary can clear me. I want justice to be done on this matter. I have suffered a lot,” she said.

Shittu’s counsel, Iyabo Oshinubi, had petitioned the Assistant Inspector General of Police, Zone 2 Command, The Director State Security Services and The Chief Magistrate, Igbosere Magistrates’ Courts, Lagos State, claiming that the three counts of stealing preferred against her client were spurious. The petition also read that Shittu’s and his nine-year-old son’s lives were being threatened.

When contacted on the telephone, Unachukwu told our correspondent that he had nothing to say, insisting that Shittu stole his property.

“I do not have anything to say. She stole my car and my household items. If you need any information, go to the police station where she was arrested,” he said.

Meanwhile, the continuation of Shittu’s trial will come up on Monday (today).
