Chris Smalling’s Manchester United Career May Be Over Soon, See Why

Whether it came from the player, or one of his hangers-on, this week’s leaking to the media makes it all but certain we’re seeing the final days of Smalling’s United career.

Mourinho warned him during that strategic rant post-Swansea: “If I were to speak with the many great football people of this team, they will say many times they played without being 100%. For the team you have to do anything, that is my way of seeing [things].
“Of course, it is not just the players, it is the players and the people that surround the players.”

And if Smalling was on the margins of events this week, then he has been well and truly dropped in it by his minders.
Everything, of course, will depend on the club source quoted by Reuters . If the information is rock solid, then Mourinho has no alternative but to get rid.

“We don’t comment on rumours or speculation but I can say that the story in the (Daily) Mail isn’t true,” stated the United insider, reacting to the claims that Smalling’s toe injury was so bad he’d be missing for at least six weeks.

The Daily Mail was fingered, but don’t blame them. This was a story that appeared in at least three of the major dailies this week. It was strategic.
Systematic. The information fed to various outlets in order to generate maximum embarrassment for the manager.

Of course, the Reuters story could be untrue. We won’t know until Mourinho next fronts the media. But why would a club insider want to drag this out further by offering disinformation?


Yet today, it’s over. Well, appears to be. His courage. His commitment. All publicly questioned. And his answer? To try and take on his manager. To run to the press and attempt to humiliate him.

If Smalling wanted to remain a United player, this past week was pure madness. But if he’d had enough and wanted out, it was the stuff of genius.
That next Mourinho presser is going to be a beauty.
