Imo Police nab 15 FUTO students for leading violent protest against school management

No fewer than 15 students of the Federal University of Technology, Owerri, FUTO, have been arrested for their alleged involvement in criminal activities during a protest against the school management, DAILY POST is reporting.

DAILY POST recalls that some students on Friday embarked on a violent protest over hike in their school fees.

The protesters alleged that fresh (100 Level) students were mandated to pay an additional acceptance fee of N42,500 which brought their fee to N124,000 per student.

According to the embattled students, the fresh students still had to pay huge amounts for accommodation and course registration.

The students allegedly protested over the hike in school fees, under the charade of giving the students free Wi-Fi which they reportedly haven’t seen yet.

Following the protest, the state Police Command said the arrested students, who allegedly masterminded the protest which engulfed the university were being investigated.

Confirming the arrest, the state Police Public Relations Officer, PPRO, Andrew Enwerem, told DAILY POST on Sunday, “I can confirm to you that about 15 students have been arrested.

“They were arrested in connection with attacks and looting of the Senate building, the Information & Computer Technology, ICT centre where computers and other information gadgets were stolen.

“The students also atacked a bank on the campus,” the PPRO noted.
