Sossick - When Nigeria Stopped

The common phrase in Nigeria over the past week has been, “No light, no fuel”. Those words have probably never been used in the same statement as much as have been used in the last couple of weeks. This led to increase in prices of almost everything especially the cost of transportation and the common man has borne the brunt of it all.

This situation wasn’t expected to be different from the others, we’ve had many in the past but NONE has been as bad as this. Power supply is at an all time low and fuel price (when available) is at an all time high, selling for as much as 700 naira per litre, YES 700naira!,and thirdly it has never lasted this long (four weeks and counting).

Now the effect is being felt at the top, and not just nudges but grossly. Big business are having to shut down. Popular lagos radio station the beat fm has shut down due to shortage of diesel, this was a first, the beat fm?? Shutting down??? Must be a bad dream. To make it worse, other radio stations have also announced they will be shutting down as well, some of them are Naija fm, Classic fm, Rainbow fm, City Fm. This is preposterous! Just when we were still battling with the gravity of how bad the situation was, we were hit with perhaps the biggest of them, MTN the biggest telecoms company in Nigeria announced they too would be shutting down, due to lack of diesel as well.
Well ,to say we were shocked would be an understatement, most of us were in utter disbelief. And to make matters worse(yes it actually can get worse),there’s no respite in sight.

The whole situation is gradually painting a very grim picture to the people. What happens if things continue this way? Who or what will shut down next and how will it affect us? We shudder at the thought alone. Lord help us.

Now I have had no fuel or electricity for weeks now and yes I have been very angry, scared, lost income, and a host of other emotions I can’t really express. To say the least, I have gone full cycle of almost every bad human emotion during this period. Now what next?

Like the title of Ruggedman’s last single “I cannot come and go and kill myself”, I truly mustn’t kill myself because of the situation.

The current situation of things has woken up another side of me, a side that has been dormant for a good number of years. My natural and childlike instincts. The curiosity about my surroundings and things I learnt and aspired to really be when I grow up. I have come to notice the vegetation, or the lack of it, the existence of wildlife (or lack of it),my physical state, and also the current dependence on technology to actually exist and relate as human beings. We don’t take time to even see how people are doing, how our environment and earth is doing and what we’re doing to them. Also I realized we have lost our will to learn and create, scientifically, artistically or any other way, and this was the foundation on which development was built and humanity thrived upon.

Our addiction to technology and pursuance of the means to acquire it has left us abandoning what is truly most important in life.

I’m grateful for this opportunity to retrace my steps and see what and how I was living wrong. I’m grateful for the opportunity to see the beauty around me again and for the opportunity to reset my mind in tune with my childlike hopes and aspirations. Indeed all was not bad through this period, all was not.

Now to the leaders that we have elected, we say that we will only tolerate good and accountable governance to help us play our position in the development and protection of our country and mother earth.

God bless us all.
